On grounds of refuse collection regulations, abandoned bicycles may be removed without a sticker or prior warning by the City of Amsterdam.
Many districts adopt a cautious approach to this regulation and as a result, many abandoned bicycles remain on the street, or are transferred to the Fietsdepot (bicycle depot) instead of refuse collection points. As a result, the depot is overwhelmed and a valuable waste stream is lost. In addition, enforcement agents are unnecessarily encumbered by having to deal with abandoned bicycles. It is not clear to residents which abandoned bicycles will be removed when and from where. There is also no mechanism for them to report (a nuisance caused by) abandoned bicycles themselves.
Develop a method of mapping, registering and transferring abandoned bicycles to the appropriate place (refuse collection point or bicycle depot).
