How do we motivate the majority of private home owners of houses built before 1985 (label G) to engage in sustainable home improvement?
CO2-neutral in 2040
The municipality of The Hague wants to be CO2-neutral in 2040. An important step in this aim is to make the private housing stock sustainable. The ‘Working on sustainable housing maintenance’ programme, popularly known as ‘Hou van je Huis’ [Love your House] aims to improve 20,000 homes until 2020.
The programme consists of various activities and regulations that stimulate and facilitate sustainability. However, supply and demand are still not matching sufficiently. The market is able to offer all the various measures (solar panels, insulation, heat pump, etc.), but many residents find the step to taking measures too complex. People can’t, won’t or don’t know how.
