Love your home

How do we motivate the majority of private home owners of houses built before 1985 (label G) to engage in sustainable home improvement?

CO2-neutral in 2040

The municipality of The Hague wants to be CO2-neutral in 2040. An important step in this aim is to make the private housing stock sustainable. The ‘Working on sustainable housing maintenance’ programme, popularly known as ‘Hou van je Huis’ [Love your House] aims to improve 20,000 homes until 2020.

The programme consists of various activities and regulations that stimulate and facilitate sustainability. However, supply and demand are still not matching sufficiently. The market is able to offer all the various measures (solar panels, insulation, heat pump, etc.), but many residents find the step to taking measures too complex. People can’t, won’t or don’t know how.

Sustainable home improvement

How do we motivate the majority of private home owners of houses built before 1985 (label G) to engage in sustainable home improvement? Investigate what is necessary to develop an offer you can’t refuse: a comprehensive range of options/a complete concept which helps owners take far reaching measures to make their home more sustainable.

Sustainability

What is our goal: Promoting sustainability. Further development of the concept “comprehensive range” in partnership with a startup. This range must lead to the upscaling of sustainable homes, whereby a successful approach is a concept that can be applied in more cities.

Additional demands / criteria

Within the research, several important aspects can be identified:

  •       Organise a complete range of options. How can the complete range/concept fit the most common types of home in The Hague? Where are the opportunities for upscaling? Also view the concepts of Nul op de Meter https://www.rvo.nl/sites/default/files/Nul%20op%20de%20Meter_A4_Brochure.pdf and include the “Deventer Woningabonnement” within the concept.
  •       Trigger demand. Develop an attractive tool/portal or process approach based on the one-stop shopping principle whereby owners are facilitated and encouraged to get involved in making their home sustainable.
