Waste works

Challenge: Wildcard

The Waste Works Buffertrottoir (BufferSidewalk) prevents flooding. It is made of biobased, circular concrete tiles that emit 80 – 90% less CO2 during production than traditional concrete tiles. Directly under these tiles is an innovative and strong crate system that can buffer up to 140 liters of water per square meter. Rainwater flows between the water-passing tiles into the crate system, where the water is buffered. The high-quality water can then locally sink into the ground. It is expected that the Waste Works Buffertrottoir will be able to prevent flooding in Amsterdam in a sustainable circular way.
